"He tapped into the paranoia that is with us now more than ever" and poked at our capacity for evil, continues Mankoff, a longtime New Yorker cartoonist and cartoon editor. ![]() "And he was a progenitor of understanding the connection between humor and horror, (which) is hilarious because it's both disturbing and at the same time friendly. ![]() "Addams was one of the first to realize how much weirdness could be tolerated in a cartoon - how far apart the frames of reference could be and still mash up to make a joke work," says Bob Mankoff, cartoon editor for Air Mail and. Often, to pierce those social facades, the best rapier – as swordsman Gomez could appreciate – was the wit of the weird. ![]() "His target was conventional wisdom and conformity, but in crafting his loving portrayal of loners and monsters, he established archetypes that survived the test of time" – including the Addams children, Wednesday and Pugsley, plus looming butler Lurch (voiced by Vernon in the new movie), odd Uncle Fester and the potion-happy Grandmama. "He set out to undermine cliches," Mouly says. (The new animated film plays off that motif, with a villain whose reality-show goal is blind communal assimilation.) And by working behind the black mask of the macabre, Addams – a New Jersey native distantly related to the two Adams presidents – felt free to satirize social conventions, including the pressure to conform. ![]()

Lucy gilmore i hate you more5/24/2023 ![]() ![]() Both tropes resolved in unexpected ways that made me glad I decided to take a chance on this book. This book featured two tropes I usually dislike in romance: deception and twins flirting with the same person. She is the perfect foil for our starchy perfectionist hero, Spencer. ![]() She’s hard-working, a little too competitive, and cares a whole lot about the people she works for. ![]() But somehow, Gilmore pulls off an extremely likable and imperfect heroine in Ruby. When heroines are so incredibly beautiful, people stop in their tracks to stare the battle for me to like them is uphill. While on the surface, I HATE YOU MORE is just another rom-com-y adversary to lovers romance, this book seriously delivers on humor and depth. Let me preface this review by saying I am a dog lover, and I’m incredibly close with my grandmother, who lives in senior housing, so, in many ways, it felt like Lucy Gilmore wrote this book just for me! It’s a surprising contemporary romance with a former pageant queen heroine turned senior citizen nurse’s assistant and an uptight veterinarian hero. ![]() Alanna the lioness series5/24/2023 ![]() This paperbook boxed set of the beloved Song of the Lioness quartet includes original afterwords from Tamora Pierce for each book in the collection: Alanna, In the Hand of the Goddess, The Woman Who Rides Like a Man, and Lioness Rampant.
